Community and Culture
The Vampyre Community is a multifaceted subculture that has a deep and rich history. We have our own beliefs, traditions, and upbringings. The vampyre subculture would fall under the alternative category, as it is a culture that goes against norms of not only society but also spiritual communities that are often shamed within society. This subculture is a melting pot of alternative lifestyles such as witchcraft, the goth lifestyle, BDSM, and even a popular game known as Vampire The Masquerade.
How do we differ from other alternative subcultures?
Our culture revolves around the shared value of the need to feed. This need can be seen as a curse; to some, it is romanticized and is considered an intimate practice. Due to the consumption of blood or energy being something not a normal practice or need in society this has caused people to either hide these needs and stick with those who relate. Or this has caused those to accept who they are and express it through fashion by dressing vampyric or even taking on vampyric personifications that is commonly seen within vamp influencers.
The cultural shift in the vampyre community over the years.
Before, the subculture was more about family, secrecy, and all things edgy. This has shifted a bit to more about being openly authentic and accepting to who you are. Spaces are more public, and old ethics have been rewritten for this cultural shift known as the modern vampyre community. Don't get me wrong, we still have a good portion who are edgy, just in a different font. I would like to debate that the values of family have lessened as people want to be in public spaces and not enter houses or closed communities. I believe that there is a lack of authenticity, which has caused existing houses to not reach out or tolerate some of the modern community.
Is the Vampyre Community the influencer or the influencee?
There has always been a back-and-forth debate similar to the one that asks, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" But for us it is Was this an influence from VTM, or did we influence VTM.
Many of the old VC speech and terminology were heavily influenced by VTM, including house titles, orders, and phrases like "the beast." To some, this is a hard pill to swallow. But how far does the vampire archetype go, and how much of it is truly one in the same with our culture? These are things to consider and are inevitably based on where your current beliefs stand between traditionalism and modernism.
Like any culture, there will always be someone who has been the influencer and the influencee; this is just human. Even within the vampyre community, take away outside influences. Vamp influencers, or people in leadership, have influenced the new and upcoming leadership, or vamp influencers.
